Billing Address Recommendations

Overview

Because of the limitations on the length of addresses that the U.S. Treasury is able to print on Treasury checks, it is recommended that billing addresses entered into eVoucher,

IMPORTANT: Courts and defender offices that allow self-service to attorneys and experts should encourage them to keep their addresses up-to-date and to verify their billing address is correct prior to submitting a voucher.

Treasury Limits on address fields

The list below describes the limits on addresses printed on Treasury checks. Following the recommendations will ensure addresses are printed correctly on checks to reduce the likelihood of checks being deemed undeliverable.

USPS ZIP Code Lookup

The USPS ZIP-Code Lookup is an online tool may be used to verify USPS preferred formatting of addresses, and to find out and include a plus-four zip code. Using USPS defined abbreviations and eliminating punctuation will ensure Treasury checks are delivered successfully.

Street address without abbreviations and with punctuation
(46 characters)
Street address with abbreviations omitting punctuation

Long Addresses

If the delivery address line will exceed 35 characters after utilizing USPS standardized abbreviations and omitting punctuation, then any unit designators (such as Suite, Unit, Room, etc.) should be placed on the line immediately above the delivery address line.
